BIOL A273 Experimental Learning: Ecology and
Evolution
(UAA fall semester 2017 and spring semester 2018)
This course engages students in hands-on experiments to explore and understand the principles of ecology and evolution in laboratory and field contexts. This course focuses on hypothesis testing and application of the scientific method through experimentation, and will help the student to develop scientific skills in the laboratory and the field. We also learn to work effectively in teams, develop skills in managing time and resources, and learn to reason and develop good experimental designs. The goals of the class include improving your knowledge in data analysis and scientific communication, both written and oral. Students will accomplish these goals through exercises, writing assignments, peer-review and in-class oral presentation. Ultimately, projects will be written up in a style suitable for submission to a scientific journal.
